TIPPING OFF: After playing its last three games against three of the top four teams in the Atlantic 10 standings, the GW men's basketball team used its bye week to regroup ahead of Saturday's Revolutionary Rivalry contest at George Mason on NBC Sports Network.
Tip-off between the Colonials and Patriots is set for 4:30 p.m. An audio-only broadcast will also be available on the TuneIn radio app.
LAST TIME OUT: GW had its three-game home winning streak stopped last Saturday against Rhode Island, 82-51. First-year guard Shawn Walker Jr. finished with 14 points and five assists. Classmates Jameer Nelson Jr. (11) and Chase Paar (10) also finished in double figures. URI's Fatts Russell led all scorers with 24 points.
SERIES HISTORY: GW leads the all-time series over George Mason, 20-6. The Colonials and Patriots are tied 4-4 in Fairfax. The Colonials took the first meeting of the season on Tricorn Hat Night, 73-67, at the Smith Center on Jan. 15. Armel Potter led the Colonials with 26 points, six rebounds and seven assists in 40 minutes. Jamison Battle added 15 points, all coming from downtown.
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON: The Patriots snapped a four-game losing skid on Wednesday with a 72-67 win at VCU. In the victory, AJ Wilson secured a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, as the Patriots dominated on the glass with a 48-27 edge in rebounds over the Rams.
Javon Greene leads George Mason in scoring and is 11th in the A-10 at 14.2 points per game. Wilson leads the A-10 in blocks per game (3.3) and total blocks (80).
SKYWALKER: Walker not only got his first A-10 start vs. Rhode Island, but he set a season-high with 14 points and also tied a season-high with five assists.
HIGH FIVES FOR NELSON: Nelson has reached double figures in each of the last five games with his season-high 22 points vs. Saint Joseph's during that span. It is the second time this season that Nelson has reached double digits in five straight games. During the five-game swing, Nelson is averaging 15.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg while shooting 50% from the field.
HEAVY LIFTING: Since Potter went down with an injury during the Davidson game, Nelson has led the Colonials in scoring over the last three games, averaging 13.6 points per game.
PAAR'S PARTY: Over the last five games, Paar is averaging 8.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. During the stretch, Paar has recorded double-doubles against Saint Joseph's (10p, 11r) and Davidson (13p, 16r), and nearly completed his third with 10 points and eight boards vs. Rhode Island.
EXTRA TIP-INS: The Rhode Island game featured the seventh different starting lineup for the Colonials … Battle extended his made three-point basket streak to 24 games with a buzzer-beating trey to end the first half … senior Adam Mitola set a season-best with 13 minutes of action vs. URI … junior Ace Stallings had his second-best scoring performance of the season with five points in 14 minutes last game.
