GW Director of Operations named one of 26 sponsored recipients
LEXINGTON, Ky. - GW Director of Volleyball Operations Bailey Williams has been honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Diversity Award, the association announced on Tuesday.
"As Bailey is in the beginning of her career on the coaching side of collegiate volleyball, being a member the AVCA Diversity Award will be a gateway to networking, education, and support," head coach Sarah Bernson said. "Being both a student-athlete and a SAAC leader at George Mason and now a graduate assistant at George Washington, Bailey is a great fit to represent the Atlantic 10 in our coaching association governing body and our growing push to support a diverse group of coaches."
Williams, who is the only recipient of the award in the Atlantic 10, had her nomination sponsored by the Atlantic 10's head coaches. She was one of 26 sponsored award recipients nationally.
"As a black female and former student-athlete I knew firsthand the challenges faced in a predominantly white sport," Williams said. "Now, in my transition from a student-athlete to joining a coaching staff, I hope to be a positive role model for student-athletes of color. I look forward to growing as a coach and using my voice to help advocate for women of color in the sport of volleyball."
For the 2020 AVCA Diversity Award program, recipients will participate in a series of educational, developmental and relationship-building experiences in conjunction with the 2020 AVCA Virtual Convention, December 16-19 (with all 2020 AVCA Diversity Award winners being invited to in-person programming at the 2021 AVCA Convention in Columbus, Ohio).Â
Recipients will also be integrated into the AVCA Diversity Award winner alumni program that consists of continuing education, relationship building and mentoring upon completion of the initial programming.
"We are so thrilled that Bailey is receiving this award," assistant coach Christina Kiselica said. "In her short time working with us so far, she has already proven to be a diligent worker with an incredible growth mindset. Every day she comes in with a spark to help propel our program forward. We truly value Bailey's experience as a former A-10 athlete and her diverse point of view as a person of color. Most of all, she is a prime role model for our student athletes and will help guide our program to future success on and off the court."
Williams is in her first year on the GW volleyball staff after a successful four-year playing career at George Mason.
