GW men's basketball and the entire GW family mourns the loss of Michael S. Tallent, a GW Athletics Hall of Famer and part of a famed family that has left an indelible mark on their alma mater.
A 6-foot-1 guard, Mike scored more than a thousand points in three seasons for GW, culminating in 1971-72 when he led the Southern Conference in scoring to earn First Team All-Conference honors. He was also an All-Tournament selection that season.
The middle of three Tallent brothers who played for GW, Mike followed older brother Bob to D.C., and after playing for his brother on GW's freshman team in 1968, played alongside Bob in 1969 when the Tallents finished as the team's top two scorers and combined for more than 46 points per game.
Prior to GW's 100th season, Mike was honored as one of the program's top 100 men's basketball student-athletes of all-time, ranking 27th.
Younger brother Pat later joined GW men's basketball, and together they make up three members of the esteemed Hall of Fame. Hailing from Langley, Ky., Mike earned two bachelor's degrees at GW, one in zoology (1973) and another in accounting (1977), before excelling in the business world as the Executive Vice President of Comcast Cable Communications, Inc., in Philadelphia.
Mike was a husband to Cindy, father to Craig, Christie and James, grandfather to Lincoln and longtime philanthropist to his alma mater as a six-figure donor to the university.
Mike passed away peacefully on Sept. 22 at the age of 71, surrounded by his loving family. The family will hold a private funeral service at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church on Friday, Oct. 2, before Mike is laid to rest at Washington Memorial Chapel Churchyard. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Mike's honor to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital or Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.
