WASHINGTON - Former Division II All-American Haoning Chen has joined the GW men's swimming and diving team for the 2020 championship season, head coach Brian Thomas announced Friday.
A native of Guangzhou, China, Chen has spent the past three seasons at Lindenwood University in MIssouri after previously swimming with the Chinese National Team. He competed at the Division II NCAA Championships all three seasons with the Lions, earning CSCAA All-American honors as a member of their 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay squads that placed sixth and eighth, respectively.
Chen is a standout in the breaststroke who took 20th in the 200-yard breast and 23rd in the 100-yard breast at the most recent D-II NCAA Championships. He was also 29th individually in the 200-yard freestyle.
In addition, Chen was recognized as a CSCAA Scholar All-American after last season for his excellence in the classroom.
In 2018, Chen was an Honorable Mention All-American for his work on Lindenwood's 200 and 800 free relays while also swimming individually in the 200 breast and 200 IM. He represented the Lions on the 800 free relay in his first trip to the national meet in 2017.
Before embarking on his collegiate career, Chen earned a spot on the Chinese National Team in 2015 after shining on the regional level as a Guangdong Province age-group champion each year from 2011-2014.
At GW, Chen will pursue a master's in Sport Management. The graduate student joins a squad that has won three straight Atlantic 10 titles and continues to grow its presence on the national scene.
