GW Equals Last Season's Win Total in Victory Against Saint Joseph's

WASHINGTON — A Saturday matinee brought the Saint Joseph's Hawks to D.C. with GW looking to return to its winning ways after falling in A-10 play last time out. Paced by their first-year class, the Colonials did exactly that with their third win in four games to notch their ninth win of the season, matching last season's victory total in the 85-69 triumph.
The four horsemen of frosh for GW each contributed something special in the win, signaling a brilliant future ahead for GW men's basketball. Jameer Nelson Jr. was a dynamo against the school where his father became a legend, as the PA product netted a season-high with 22 points, none more explosive than a mammoth two-handed jam caught in the air off a three-point miss and flushed home that put GW up 30-15 midway through the first. Fellow first-year Chase Paar secured his first career double-double while registering season-highs in almost every statistical category, highlighted by his 10 points, game-high 11 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 30:38 of action. Long-range bomber Jamison Battle splashed home three more triples en route to his 15 points, while point guard Shawn Walker Jr. dished five dimes in 5:22 of play. All told GW's rookie class had 47 points, 20 rebounds, six made threes and connected on 17-of-27 shots from the floor.
GW won exactly in the way Head Coach Jamion Christian instructs, with efficiency in shot selection. GW canned 10-of-21 three-pointers (.476), dominated in the paint with 42 points inside, and secured 13 points at the free throw line, getting every point either in the paint, at the line or from deep in another soundly analytically-executed contest.
Upperclassmen Armel Potter (15 points and a game-high seven assists) and Maceo Jack (14 points, three three-pointers) joined their first-year friends Battle, Paar and Nelson Jr. both in the starting line-up and in double figures, giving the Buff and Blue all five starters with 10+ points. The Colonials were also careful with the ball and committed just seven turnovers, for a superlative 18:7 team assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Hawks countered with three in double-figures, Ryan Daly (16 points on 5-of-14 shooting), Anthony Longpre (15 points, 10 rebounds), and Cameron Brown (10 points).
GW now plays host to Davidson this coming Wednesday, January 29th, with tip-off at 7pm live on ESPN+ and the TuneIn radio app.
