Colonials open home slate on Sunday
LEADING OFF: The George Washington gymnastics team is set to kick off its 2020 home slate on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes Cornell, Kent State and Penn to the Charles E. Smith Center for the 13th annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational.
Â
LINDSEY FERRIS: Lindsey Ferris was a four-year performer on the gymnastics team and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in communication in 2001 before serving as a Presidential Administrative Fellow (PAF) while earning her masters in forensic science in 2003. Following graduation, she achieved great success by becoming a Special Agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations before her untimely passing.
Â
Following the meet, recent graduate Alex Zois will be honored as the recipient of the Attitude is Everything award, annually awarded to the gymnast that best exemplifies Lindsey's vibrant spirit for life, sincere passion for her sport, and selfless dedication to her team.
Â
LAST TIME OUT: Under the bright lights of Hynes Convention Center, the Colonials opened their 2020 season at the Little Boston Invitational on Saturday evening. Behind strong team performances on vault and beam, the Colonials finished the day second with a score of 193.775. Maryland finished first with a score of 196.150, while GW (1-1) totaled its 193.775 behind team scores of 48.975 on vault, 47.900 on bars, 48.975 on beam and 47.925 on floor. West Chester took third with 193.250.
Â
HOME SWEET HOME: The Colonials have performed some of their best routines at home and boast a 48-4 record in the Smith Center dating back to the 2015 season.
Â
SENIOR STANDARD:Â Senior co-captain Cydney Crasa opened her season in fine fashion at the Little Boston Invitational. Crasa kicked off her night with a team-high 9.800 on floor exercise, marking her sixth-straight score of 9.800 or above on the event dating back to last season. Crasa continued her momentum on vault with a career-high matching 9.850, earning a spot on the podium at third along with teammate Deja Chambliss. The Stony Brook, N.Y., native finished her night on beam, posting a 9.750 in her debut on the event.
Â
NEW YEAR, NEW ME: Five returning Colonials made their debut on a new event on Saturday evening. In addition to Crasa's first time competing on beam, Chambliss was also new to the event, earning a 9.650. Chambliss, who returned to competition for the first time since rupturing her Achilles last season, also added bars to her repertoire in Boston. Junior Katya Karpova likewise made her bars debut on Saturday, posting a team-high matching 9.800, a mark that ranks tied for fourth in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). Olivia Norman also made a splash in her vault debut, finishing with a 9.825, a score that ranks second on the team and fourth in EAGL.Â
Â
VAULTing: The Buff and Blue vault lineup will be a force to be reckoned with in 2020, as the squad has already matched its 48.975 season-high from last season. In addition to Crasa and Chambliss' team-high 9.850s and Norman's 9.825, junior Chloe Vitoff added a 9.750 and first-year Hannah Munnelly posted a 9.700. GW makes up three of the top-five gymnasts on vault in EAGL, with Crasa and Chambliss clocking in at No. 2 and Norman taking the fourth spot.Â
