Colonials play the Terps to a draw for the second straight season
WASHINGTON – On a sunny Sunday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus, the George Washington women's soccer squad battled Maryland to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
GW (2-1-1) had six scoring opportunities in the overtime periods but could not find the back of the net as the Colonials went the distance with Maryland (3-2-1) with neither side tallying in the extra sessions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 49th Minute: After a back-and-forth battle in the first half, Maryland was able to break the deadlock after the break with a goal from Mikayla Dayes. UMD 1, GW 0
• 76th Minute: With 15 minutes left on the clock, the Colonials were able to tie it up with a goal from Rachel Sorkenn. Allie Nornes found a gap between the Maryland defenders, darted towards the box, and crossed the ball to Sorkenn, who was able to tip it in to even the score. GW 1, UMD 1
NOTEWORTHY
• GW doubled Maryland's shots in the first half, recording eight while holding the Terps to four. The Buff and Blue went on to finish the day with the 23-16 advantage in shots.
• Sorkenn's goal marks her third straight game recording a point. The redshirt sophomore previous tallied an assist at American and against Liberty.
• Sofia Pavon paced the squad on attack with six shots against the Terps. Sorkenn followed closely behind with four.
• Tamaki Machi finished the day with seven saves, just one shy of the season-high eight she made against Liberty on Thursday.
• GW had its best look in the final minute of the second overtime period when Sammy Neyman shot the ball right into the hands of the Terps' keeper.
UP NEXT
The Colonials will wrap up their four-game homestand next week. GW will first host Towson on Thursday at 3 p.m. before welcoming Bucknell to the GW Soccer Field for a 1 p.m. bout on Sunday.
