Colonials visit unbeaten Cavaliers in non-conference action
The Colonials are set to take on the unbeaten Cavaliers in a 7 p.m. start at Klockner Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: Max Holdsworth scored his third goal of the fall on Saturday, but the Colonials dropped a 2-1 decision to George Mason on the Mount Vernon Campus.
After Holdsworth's penalty kick in the 67th minute halved the deficit, the Buff and Blue continued to pressure the Patriots but couldn't produce the equalizer.
MARQUEE MATCHUP: This marks the fourth straight season GW has faced off against a ranked opponent.
The Colonials are seeking their first win over a top-10 foe since downing No. 1 Indiana, 1-0, on Oct. 1, 1988. They are 1-3 all-time in such games, most recently falling 4-1 to No. 7 North Carolina on Sept. 19, 2017.
Last season, the Buff and Blue dueled No. 15 Duke to a scoreless deadlock in Durham, N.C. Their last win against a ranked foe came when they defeated No. 22 Navy, 2-1, in double overtime on Sept. 16, 2014.
MAX EFFORT: Holdsworth has been an offensive catalyst in his senior season, factoring in on six of GW's seven goals with three goals and three assists.
The senior from England has connected on all three of his chances from the penalty spot, scoring vs. Liberty, Brown and George Mason. His nine points are a team high and rank tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10.
Holdsworth has already eclipsed his point total from last fall when he posted four assists in his first season as a Colonial after transferring from American. HIs seven assists since the start of the 2018 campaign are the most for any Colonial in that span.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA: The Cavaliers defeated then-No. 21 Notre Dame, 1-0, on Saturday to improve to 8-0 for the first time since 2006. They are among four unbeaten and untied clubs nationally and were elevated into the No. 1 spot in the United Soccer Coaches, Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News national polls this week.
Virginia has allowed just one goal over the eight matches, posting four straight clean sheets. Daryl Dike leads the squad with eight points via two goals and four assists.
This is the fifth all-time meeting between GW and Virginia and first since 2009. They had a scheduled match canceled due to inclement weather in 2015.
UP NEXT: GW has a break this weekend before jumping back into A-10 play with a road match at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
