Colonials aim to return to conference tournament for second time in three years
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball is projected to finish fifth in the Atlantic 10, according to a preseason poll of the league's coaches announced Tuesday. Head coach Sarah Bernson enters her third season at the helm of the Colonials following a pair of 11-win campaigns.
The top six teams in the league at the end of the regular season qualify for the A-10 Tournament, hosted this year at Rhode Island from Nov. 22-24. GW is hoping to return to the tournament for the second time in three years under Bernson after advancing to the conference semifinals in 2017.
Dayton, the defending tournament champion, secured eight of the 10 first-place votes and was projected to win the league, followed by defending regular-season champ VCU. Saint Louis was tabbed third, followed by La Salle, GW, Duquesne, George Mason, Davidson, Fordham and Rhode Island.
The Colonials return four starters from last year's team and welcome a talented recruiting class that features graduate transfers Paty Valle (TCU) and Caroline Sklaver (Princeton). The Buff & Blue open the campaign by hosting the DC Challenge at the Smith Center on Aug. 30-31. GW will take on American (12 p.m.) and Hartford (7 p.m.) on Friday before finishing the weekend with Howard (2 p.m.) on Saturday.
