Colonials will participate in Puerto Vallarta College Challenge
GW softball will head to Mexico to kick off the 2020 season as part of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge, Triple Crown Sports announced Thursday.
The tournament, held Feb. 6-9, 2020, at Nancy Almaraz Stadium in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, will mark the first contests on foreign soil in program history for the defending Atlantic 10 co-champion Colonials.
In addition to GW, the field for the four-day event includes 2019 NCAA runner-up Oklahoma, Oregon, BYU, Nevada, Long Beach State and Utah Valley. Four of the seven teams in action advanced to the postseason last spring.
GW's full tournament schedule is listed below.
"This is an amazing opportunity to open our season in Puerto Vallarta," GW head coach Shane Winkler said. "It will be a great experience for our student-athletes, and we'll get to test our talented team against a very deep field, including a couple of the best programs in the country.
"This trip will have an NCAA Regional feel to it, and our team needs as many of those opportunities as possible to prepare us for the challenging season ahead."
GW is coming off a landmark 2019 season in which it posted a program-record 44 wins and claimed a share of its first conference title. Behind a nationally-ranked offense, the Colonials advanced to the postseason for the first time with a trip to the National Invitational Softball Championship Liberty Regional.
Next spring, GW is set to return a majority of its roster, headlined by A-10 Player of the Year Jenna Cone and All A-10 pitcher Sierra Lange.
This is the fifth edition of the Puerta Vallarta College Challenge. More details on the tournament, including fan info, can be found here.
