Colonials to battle eight postseason teams from last year
WASHINGTON - Under head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, GW women's basketball has consistently tested itself against the nation's best during its non-conference schedule, and the 2019-20 campaign will be no different.
The Colonials will square off with 13 opponents prior to league play, eight of whom advanced to the postseason a year ago, including five defending league champions. GW will also encounter four foes from the DMV, reigniting multiple local rivalries.
The Buff & Blue open the season with a road trip to Villanova (Nov. 6) in the second leg of a home-and-home series before welcoming Princeton (Nov. 10) to the Smith Center for the home opener. The Colonials bested the eventual Ivy League regular season and tournament champions, 64-49, in last season's Smith Center lid-lifter.
A three-game trek in the span of eight days follows with visits to Lehigh (Nov. 13) and Memphis (Nov. 17) before a trip to College Park to square off with perennial top 25 foe and defending Big Ten regular season champion Maryland (Nov. 20).
The Colonials will then be home for the Thanksgiving holiday, sandwiched by Sunday home games against Georgetown (Nov. 24) and Coppin State (Dec. 1). The Colonials and Hoyas will be meeting for the seventh time in nine years and for the 37th time overall, while GW hosts Coppin for the first time since 2016, aiming to maintain its perfect 6-0 mark against the Eagles.
A pair of road games ensues with trips to Delaware (Dec. 4) and Quinnipiac (Dec. 7) in the first week of December. GW has not visited Delaware since 1984, and will be facing off against the defending MAAC regular season and tournament champions in Quinnipiac for just the second time in program history.
The Colonials won't travel outside of the District for the rest of the slate, starting with a home matchup against Minnesota (Dec. 10). The Golden Gophers, coming off a trip to the WNIT, are the lone program on the schedule that the Colonials have never faced. GW has now hosted at least one Power 5 non-conference foe in 22 of the last 23 campaigns dating back to 1996-97.
The schedule wraps up with home games against James Madison (Dec. 20), the defending CAA regular season champion, and William & Mary (Dec. 29), in addition to a short jaunt to American (Dec. 22) to reignite the series with the Eagles, who won the Patriot League regular season title a year ago.
In addition to the regular season, the Colonials will also host an exhibition with Division II Mercyhurst (Oct. 27). The game will be free and open to the public.
Season tickets are on sale now for the 2019-20 campaign by visiting GetGWTix.com or by calling 202-99-GWTIX.
