Colonials head to Philadelphia for weekend set
George Washington softball closes the regular season this weekend with a three-game set at La Salle.
The Colonials (37-15, 13-7 A-10) will try to build momentum heading into the A-10 Championship as they take on the Explorers at West Campus Softball Field in Philadelphia.
The series opens Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon before finishing Sunday with another noon first pitch.
LAST TIME OUT: GW closed its home slate last weekend with a series win against Dayton. The Colonials swept a Saturday doubleheader on the Mount Vernon Campus before dropping Sunday's finale.
Jessica Linquist paced GW at the plate against the Flyers, totaling four extra-base hits and six runs scored in the two victories.
In the opener, the junior from New Jersey kicked off a three-run seventh inning with an HBP as the Colonials rallied to win 6-5 on Priscilla Martinez's walk-off two-run single. She went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple to help them take the second game, 6-3.
Sierra Lange started all three games in the circle for GW, earning a pair of wins to improve to 25-11 on the season. The sophomore hurler recorded 10 strikeouts over 18 1/3 innings to push her program-record total to 196 this spring.
The nation's leader in hits with 78 on the season, Lange picked up three more knocks vs. the Flyers to extend her hitting streak to nine games.
GW finished the season 23-8 at the Vern, setting a new mark for home victories.
STANDINGS CHECK: Currently third in the A-10 standings, GW has clinched a spot in the six-team conference championship, which kicks off next Wednesday at UMass. With a strong finish, the Colonials could earn a top-two seed and a bye on the opening day of the tournament.
The Buff and Blue have never finished higher than fourth in the conference's regular season standings.
At 5-15 in A-10 play, La Salle has been eliminated from contention for the A-10 championship.
ELITE COMPANY: With a .353 team batting average, GW remains second nationally behind only No. 1 Oklahoma (.363).
The Colonials have piled up a program-record 508 hits through 52 games. They've reached double figures 25 times, highlighted by a pair of recent 18-hit efforts vs. UMass (April 14) and St. Bonaventure (April 18).
The Buff and Blue also rank in the top 25 nationally in doubles per game (1.85, third), triples per game (0.37, eighth), on-base percentage (.414, 11th), slugging percentage (.528, 16th) and scoring (6.37, 19th).
GW owns three of the top five individual batting averages in the conference with Lange (.436), Jenna Cone (.401) and Linquist (.394).
JENNA-RATING OFFENSE: Cone drove in three runs Saturday to break her own single-season program RBI record. The junior from California has knocked in 62 runs in 53 games this spring to rank fifth nationally.
With her 18th long ball of the season in the opener vs. Dayton, Cone also tied her own single-season record.
Earlier this season, Cone became GW's career leader in both categories. She enters the weekend with 48 home runs and 182 RBIs in 157 games as a Colonial.
Hitting a career-best .401, Cone has also taken down the GW records for extra-base hits (32) and total bases (135) this spring.
COMING ON STRONG: Martinez has been GW's leading hitter in A-10 play with a .453 batting average (24-for-53) over 20 games.
Primarily hitting in the cleanup spot, Martinez has reached base in all but one contest vs. conference foes with seven multi-hit efforts.
Along the way, Martinez has upped her season batting average to .347 (43-for-124). She currently ranks fifth on the club with 14 extra-base hits (12 doubles, one triple, one home run).
SCOUTING LA SALLE: The Explorers (12-31 overall) posted their first A-10 series win of the season last weekend, taking two of three at Rhode Island.
First-year Cailey Joyce leads La Salle at the plate (.290 average, six home runs) and in the circle (team-high eight wins).
GW leads the all-time series, 17-16, after winning a series at the Vern last season.
ON DECK: The A-10 Championship runs next Wednesday through Saturday at Sortino Field in Amherst, Mass. The winner earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
