Colonials earn multiple postseason nods for fourth straight season
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Three George Washington women's tennis student-athletes have received Atlantic 10 postseason honors, the league announced on Monday. Senior Sara Grubac earned a spot on the First Team while also receiving All-Academic Team recognition. Fellow-senior Maria Siopacha was also recognized on the First Team while first-year Katarina Marinkovikj received a Second Team nod.
Grubac lands on the First Team after posting a 15-6 record in dual match play and 6-1 mark in A-10 action playing primarily at No. 2 and No. 3. The Belgrade, Serbia, native was twice named A-10 Player of the Week and went an impressive 7-3 in the final 10 matches of the season. In doubles play, the senior paired up with Marinkovikj and notched a 12-8 record and 5-1 mark against conference opponents. It marks the third time she's received all-conference honors after second team nods in 2015-16 and 2017-18. Off the court, the Psychology major owns a 3.81 GPA and is a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar (2017, 2019).
Siopacha caps her highly decorated career with First Team honors for the third straight season. The 2018 A-10 Co-Most Outstanding Player continued her momentum in the 2018-19 season, earning a spot to play at the ITA Oracle Masters and Riviera ITA Women's All-American Tennis Championship in the fall. In the spring, the Limassol, Cyprus, native went 11-9 overall and 5-3 against conference opponents all at the top spot in the lineup. The business economics and public policy major also played at No. 1 in doubles action with partner Melis Bayraktaroglu, finishing the season with a team-best 12-6 record and 7-1 mark in A-10 play.
Joining the Colonials in the spring, Marinkovikj made an immediate impact on the GW lineup and closed out the season with a 15-4 record at No. 4. Against conference opponents, the GW Female Rookie of the Year went a team-best tying 6-1 and wrapped up the season riding a seven-match win streak. The Skopje, Macedonia, native was also named A-10 Rookie of the Week in February.
