ORLANDO – Entering Sunday's final round at the Atlantic 10 Championship, senior Logan Lowe began the day three shots off the lead and knowing he'd need a special round to capture the championship that had, to that point, eluded him in his decorated collegiate career.
Â
Lowe, whose previous best finish at the tournament was a T-8th showing in 2017, carded a 68 for the second consecutive round to finish -6 overall, topping a host of competitors that included his teammate Adrian Castagnola at -5. It marks the fifth career individual title for Lowe, the most in school history.
Â
The title wasn't decided until the 54th hole of the tournament, as Lowe was tied at -6 with Ian Peng of VCU stepping to the tee box on 18. Peng went on to make bogey, while Lowe sunk a two-foot par putt to earn the victory.
Â
Moments earlier, Castagnola capped off a stellar weekend himself with a birdie on 18 and 5-under 67, the lowest round in the competition. The junior from Texas finished tied for second which marks the best result of his career.
Â
When the day started, Lowe was -2 and three shots behind Jack Lang of Davidson, who he and Peng were paired with in the final grouping. Lowe, who led the field with 41 pars, a nod to his steady play, again limited his mistakes on Sunday with just one bogey all day. He jump-started his round with a birdie on #3 before hitting a hole-in-one on the 180-yard par 3 fourth that got him to -5 overall.
Â
Still, Lang held a two-shot lead for the first half of the day, until he made double-bogey on 12 that created a three-way tie with Lowe and Castagnola. Lowe then played his final five holes 1-under, while Castagnola was even and Lang was +3. He birdied #16 to create a two-way tie with Peng, before sealing the victory two holes later.
Â
As a team, the Colonials shot -1 on Sunday and finished in third place at +13. VCU shot -7 in the final round to take the title at +3, two shots in front of Davidson.
Â
Following the tournament, Lowe was named to the All-Conference team for the fourth straight season. He earns an automatic berth in NCAA Regionals by virtue of his victory, which will be held May 12-15 at six sites around the country. Golf Channel will air a selection show on Wednesday, May 1 at 9 p.m. ET.
