Zois sat atop league all-around standings all season
DURHAM, N.H. – George Washington gymnastics' Alex Zois was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Year, the league announced at the conclusion of Saturday's championship meet.
Zois takes the top EAGL honor for the first time in her career after topping the all-around league standings all season with her 39.305 NQS, 39.196 average, and 39.425 high. She also ranks of 33rd nationally in the all-around.
The honor marks the sixth straight season that a GW gymnast has won a major end-of-season EAGL award, following Cami Drouin-Allaire in 2018 (Gymnast and Senior of the Year), Jillian Winstanley in 2017 (Scholar-Athlete of the Year), Drouin-Allaire in 2016 (Gymnast of the Year), Winstanley in 2015 (Rookie of the Year), and Chelsea Raineri in 2014 (Rookie of the Year).
Returning from a season-ending knee injury last season, Zois returned to the squad as a fifth-year in 2019 and has proven to be the most consistent performer on the team. An inspiring captain and outstanding leader, Zois constantly supports and motivates her teammates both in and out of the gym. This year the team's motto was "All Team," which summarizes the mentality Zois has possessed throughout her entire GW Gymnastics career.
The Crofton, Md. native has posted 10 all-around scores above the 39.000 threshold this season and 18 times in her career, and added eight podium appearances at the top of the all-around podium in 2019.
Zois posted a career-high 39.425 in the all-around on GW's Senior Day (3/1) behind a then career-high 9.875 on vault, a 9.825 on bars, a season-high 9.875 on beam, and a 9.850 on floor. The co-captain went on to match her career-high 39.425 in the regular season finale at Towson (3/17) behind a career-high 9.925 on vault - the highest score given to a gymnast in EAGL on vault this season - a 9.775 on bars, a season-high matching 9.875 on beam, and a 9.850 on floor.
A three-time EAGL Gymnast of the Week, Zois also boasts ranks of fourth on vault, sixth on bars, tied for second on beam, and second on floor in EAGL and was the only gymnast in EAGL to earn All-EAGL First Team Recognition for all four events and the all-around.
