Colonials to kick off 2019 season on Cooper River

READY TO ROW: The George Washington women's rowing team is slated to kick off its spring 2019 season on Saturday when it heads to New Jersey's Cooper River to compete at the historic 37th Annual Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple University. Preliminary racing begins Saturday morning and ends in the afternoon with Grand Finals.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Marci Robles, the Colonials will make their seventh straight appearance in the Murphy Cup and will send three boats to the event.
GW enters a tough field that features 16 competitors, including fellow Atlantic 10 teams Duquesne, Saint Joseph's, and La Salle.
MURPHY CUP MEMORIES: Last season, the Colonials saw three of four boats medal in a field of 18 crews to post their best finish at the Murphy Cup in program history.
Both the Varsity 8 and JV8 placed first in their respective morning heats to advance and clinch spots in the afternoon Grand Finals, where the boats challenged their opponents and finished the day with a pair of third-place performances.
The Varsity 8 placed third out of six schools in the final, finishing in 7:26.02. Drexel topped the field with a time of 7:18.41 with Temple (7:25.40) finishing just 1.38 seconds before the Colonials (7:26.02). GW edged out Delaware, Fordham and Wesleyan.
ROBLES' REMARKS: "The team is coming off of a really productive winter training season, and we're excited to take the speed we've been building out on the race course."
