Colonials aim to continue momentum from season-high score on Sunday

LEADING OFF: Coming off a season-high performance on Sunday, the George Washington gymnastics team will look to continue its momentum this Saturday at 2 p.m. as it heads to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship at Whittemore Center Arena in Durham, New Hampshire.

AT STAKE: The Colonials will compete against conference rivals New Hampshire, North Carolina State, North Carolina, Towson, and Pittsburgh as they strive for the program's third-ever EAGL title and the program's eighth conference title overall.

GW won the Atlantic 10 Championship, when the conference sponsored gymnastics, for five straight seasons from 1998-2002.

STILL FIGHTING: Through 11 weeks of competition, the Colonials rank 36th nationally with an NQS of 195.335. With the top 36 squads advancing to the NCAA Regional Championships, GW remains in the fight for a spot at Regionals. According to RoadtoNationals.com, GW is one of four teams battling for the final two spots.

ALL-EAGL: The Colonials had six gymnasts named to All-EAGL teams as Alex Zois, Hannah Cohen, Cydney Crasa, Anna Warhol, Julia McLaughlin, and Simone Banen combined to earn six First Team honors and six Second Team nods.

FINISHING STRONG: GW closed its regular season on a high note on Sunday, posting a season-high 196.025 to finish second against Maryland and a trio of EAGL opponents. Maryland topped the field with a 196.450, with the Colonials not far behind at 196.025. New Hampshire finished third with 194.875, the host Tigers took fourth with an even 194.000, and Pittsburgh rounded out the field with 193.850. GW earned its first score above the 196.000 threshold behind a season-high 49.125 on vault, a 48.875 on bars, a season-high 48.975 on beam, and a 49.050 on floor.

ACING THE ALL-AROUND: Zois was named EAGL Gymnast of the Week for the third time this season after finishing atop the podium in the all-around for the eighth time in 2019 with a career-high matching 39.425 at Towson. The Crofton, Md. product posted a career-high 9.925 on vault, the highest vault score given to an EAGL gymnast this season, and added a 9.775 on bars, a season-high matching 9.875 on beam, and a 9.850 on floor. In addition to the all-around title, Zois finished first on vault and tied for second on beam. The fifth-year co-captain also paced the Colonials with five First Team All-EAGL nods (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, all-around) and was the only gymnast in EAGL to earn First Team recognition on all four events plus the All-Around.

HELLO HANNAH: Cohen was tabbed as EAGL Co-Specialist of the Week after posting a career-high 9.850 on bars to finish in a tie for second on Sunday at Towson. Cohen also paced the squad on beam with a career-high matching 9.875, her ninth straight score above a 9.800 on the event. The Dix Hills, N.Y. native wrapped up the regular season ranked tied for second on beam in EAGL with her 9.855 NQS, earning a spot on the All-EAGL First Team.

VICTORY ON VAULT: For the second straight meet, GW surpassed its season-high on vault, earning a 49.125 at Towson. Just three meets after setting a new career-high on vault with a 9.875 on GW's senior day (3/1), Zois surpassed her personal best once again, posting a 9.925 with a beautiful stick to earn the vault crown. Fellow co-captain McLaughlin also had a career-high day on vault, earning a score of 9.825 to finish in a tie for third with Warhol, who matched her personal best with the 9.825. Crasa added a 9.800 and Chloe Vitoff registered a 9.750 to wrap up GW's season-high performance.

BEST IN THE BUSINESS: Margie Foster-Cunningham, in her 34th season at the helm, earned her third straight, and fourth overall, EAGL Coach of the Year award last season. Assistant coach Stephanie Stoicovy Worrell, who was recognized as the EAGL Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018, is in her fourth season and is joined by first-year assistant coach Chelsea Raineri. Both Stoicovy Worrell ('13) and Raineri ('17) are decorated GW gymnastics alumnae.Â
