Colonials took fifth in team standings
CLEVELAND - Tommi Wolst closed his GW career in style Saturday, earning gold on the final night of the CSCAA National Invitational Championship.
The senior from Germany won the 100-yard individual medley in 48.95 seconds to set a meet record. It's the third fastest time in the event nationally this season.
Wolst was among three Colonials to reach the podium at Cleveland State's Busbey Natatorium, along with silver medalists Emils Pone (200-yard backstroke) and Josh Legge (1,650-yard freestyle).
With the close of the meet, GW wrapped up another banner season on the men's side. The Colonials won their third straight A-10 title in convincing fashion before acquitting themselves well against a tough national field this week. They finished fifth out of 25 squads with 491 points and won nine medals overall.
Wolst was the top seed in morning prelims (:50.01) before trimming more than a second off his time en route to the Buff and Blue's first gold of the meet. He closed out the night teamed with Moritz Fath, Andrew Cho and Alexander Auster to place ninth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:59.84).
Legge put together a tremendous swim in the 1,650 free, touching in a personal-best time of 15:19.12. The first-year from North Carolina dropped more than four seconds off his silver-medal winning time at the A-10 Championships to finish less than a second off teammate Moritz Fath's program-record pace.
Legge also earned a spot in the 200-yard butterfly finals with a personal-best time (1:48.91) in prelims. He scored in his fourth individual event of the week by taking 18th there, just behind classmate James Torrez, who placed 14th.
Pone garnered his second individual medal of the week with his runner-up finish in the 200 back. The junior from Latvia touched in 1:44.01, just six hundredths of a second off his personal best set in a gold-medal swim at last month's A-10 Championships.
Cho just missed joining Pone on the podium, taking fourth in 1:45.33. The junior from California also scored in the 50- and 100-yard backstroke this week.
Four Colonials scored in the 100-yard freestyle with Auster leading the way in the A final (10th, :44.92). Fath (13th, :44.75), Forstenhaeusler (17th, :45.26) and Dylan Arzoni (18th, :45.47) qualified for the B final.
Youssef Ragab was GW's other A finalist on the night. The sophomore from Egypt earned his final spot with a personal-best time of 2:00.03 and went on to finish 10th.
