CLEVELAND - GW's Emily Zhang made the most of her final opportunity to compete in Buff and Blue, earning a silver medal Saturday night to close out the CSCAA National Invitational Championship.
The senior from Rockville, Md., completed the 100-yard individual medley in 56.31 seconds to become the first Colonial women to reach the podium this week racing a tough national field.
Coming off a memorable Atlantic 10 meet in which she won seven medals to help GW match its best ever team finish, Zhang was able to add more hardware to her collection. She was in third place out of 56 competitors after morning prelims and managed to drop time in the final to take second behind the University of San Diego's Kailyn Evans.
To close out the night, Zhang swam an impressive leadoff leg to help GW's 400-yard freestyle relay finish 16th in 3:25.89. She was followed by Andrea Moussier, Rebecca Smolcic and Caroline Racke in the relay.
Jackie Torrez had a record-breaking night, taking down her own mark in the 200-yard breaststroke. The junior from California shave 1.40 seconds off her prelim time to touch in 2:16.99, which was good for fourth in the B final and 14th place. The swim topped her previous mark set at the 2017 A-10 Championship.
Torrez also had a strong morning swim in the 200-yard butterfly, an event in which she holds the A-10 record. She qualified in 16th place in 2:02.51, though she opted not to swim the final with a quick turnaround after her record breaststroke effort.
As a team, GW followed up its second-place finish at the A-10 Championship by taking 16th out of 47 scoring squads at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. The Colonials produced six different individual scorers this week with seniors Zhang and Racke topping the list.
