Racing against strong interconference fields, the GW sailing team recorded solid finishes in the St. Mary's Team Race and Navy Spring Women's last weekend.
ST. MARY'S TEAM RACE (5TH OF 10) | FULL RESULTS
In the second Team Race league qualifier of the season, the Colonials took fifth-place, including second among Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association teams. With racing limited to Sunday, only one round robin was completed, with the Colonials registering a 5-4 record. Stanford topped the field with an 8-1 mark and was followed by Brown University (7-2), Hobart & Williams Smith (7-2) and College of Charleston (6-3).
"We came away from the regatta with some solid wins and a lot of good talking points," said head coach Billy Martin. "We were right in the thick of things. I think we learned a lot and moving forward that's going to pay off. We were able to rotate four skippers and crews in so it was a good weekend to see how different boats work together from a chemistry standpoint. It was definitely productive in that regard and good for me to see a lot of people in the water. We should be happy with a fifth-place finish and second in Mid-Atlantic, which puts us in comfortable shape to qualify for the Prosser Trophy in a few weeks."
NAVY SPRING WOMEN'S (6TH OF 18) | FULL RESULTS
In its toughest fleet race of the spring, the Colonials took sixth place in both A and B Divisions. Riley Legault and Alexandra Fayer finished in the top third of the field in five of 11 races, while Aitana Mendiguren and Sarah Noyes also had five including one first-place result.
"We sent our top guns to Navy and they did well," said Martin. "We had a solid performance from both our A and B Divisions. We sailed fairly consistently; we had a couple tough finishes that we're going to have to figure out but certainly we have the speed and the boat handling to get around the race track. This was the first true test for the women's team so it's good to go out and get a really solid sixth."
UP NEXT
The Colonials will take advantage of the spring-like weather in Washington to get extra practice in during spring break, before returning to competition with team races at Navy and Washington College next weekend.
