Gymnastics Upsets Maryland on Senior Day

WASHINGTON – In its final night of competition in the Charles E. Smith Center, the George Washington gymnastics team capped off its 2019 home slate by upsetting No. 32 Maryland with a team score of 195.325 to finish second in its Senior Day Meet on Friday evening.
No. 19 BYU topped the field with a 196.500 while Maryland finished third with 194.825.
The Colonials earned their 195.325 behind team scores of 48.725 on vault, a season-high 49.025 on bars, a 48.650 on beam, and a 48.925 on floor.
In fitting senior day fashion, fifth-year co-captain Alex Zois closed out her career in the Smith Center with a personal best 39.425 in the all-around to finish in a tie for first place, her third straight all-around title and seventh of the season. The Crofton, Md., product earned her career-high 39.425 behind a personal-best and first place score of 9.875 on vault, a 9.825 on bars, a season-high matching second place score of 9.875 on beam, and a first-place 9.850 on floor.
In addition, four Colonials finished the night either matching or surpassing their season highs while the squad combined to make four podium appearances on the night.
ROTATION ONE
The Colonials started their Senior Day off on vault, finishing with a team score of 48.725. Zois paced the squad by opening the night with a career-high 9.875, a score that placed her at the top of the podium. Cydney Crasa also had a solid performance on vault, earning a 9.775, while Chloe Vitoff and Julia McLaughlin earned identical 9.700s. Anna Warhol and Olivia Zona wrapped up the first rotation with 9.675s.
ROTATION TWO
GW then moved to bars, where the squad had its best event of the day, posting a season-high 49.025. First-year Simon Banen led the way with a career-high 9.850 to finish fifth. Zois followed closely behind with a 9.825 while Anna earned a 9.800. Olivia Raymond and McLaughlin posted matching 9.775s to wrap up the Colonials' season-high performance on bars.
ROTATION THREE
The Buff and Blue's third rotation came on beam, where the Colonials posted a team score of 48.650. Zois continued her momentum on beam, matching her season-high with a 9.875 to finish in a tie for second. Hannah Cohen and Katya Karpova also had stellar performances on beam, earning identical 9.850s, while Zona added a 9.725. For Karpova, the 9.850 marked a career-high. Banen rounded out the third rotation with a 9.350.
ROTATION FOUR
GW capped the night off on floor, recording a 48.925. Zois paced the squad with a 9.850 to share the top spot on the podium. Banen also put together a stellar performance on floor, earning a 9.800 to finish third, while Karpova registered a 9.775. Kaplan and Crasa closed out the night with matching 9.750s.
SENIOR SALUTE
GW celebrated its senior class of Brooke Bray, Alex Zois, Yurina Harada, Julia McLaughlin, student coach Remi Roberts and manager Lexi Napoli on Friday. The seniors have been instrumental in the GW gymnastics program's return to the NCAA Regionals in each of the past three seasons, the 2017 EAGL Championship, and a likely fifth consecutive trip to regionals this spring.
