Former ACC Player of the Year joins GW from Southeastern Oklahoma State
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball head coach Sarah Bernson announced the hiring of former ACC Player of the Year Brianna Barry to her coaching staff on Thursday. Barry will serve as an assistant coach for the Colonials.
"Bri is an energetic person and a passionate coach that is a fantastic fit for our current trajectory of culture growth," Bernson said. "Her experience as a top-level middle blocker, international playing pedigree, and dedication to training will aid our team in physicality and education.
"I am impressed with her commitment to the sport and know that she will be an asset to our program."
Barry comes to GW after five years as the head coach at Division II Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She accumulated 61 wins during her tenure with the Savage Storm, advancing to the Great American Tournament on four occasions.
In 2016, Barry led the program on its longest postseason run as the No. 8 seed, defeating the top seed Harding in the first round before advancing to the program's first conference championship match.
Barry joined Southeastern as a graduate assistant in 2013 before being elevated to head coach in 2014. She coach 13 all-conference performers in her five years at the helm.
"I am grateful for the opportunity that Coach Bernson has provided me to join the George Washington volleyball staff," Barry said. "As I move into the next chapter of my coaching career, I look forward to being a part of the growth of the program here at GW."
Barry played collegiately at Florida State where she earned ACC Player of the Year honors as a senior in 2009. She was also tabbed a second team All-American and the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year all while serving as the team's co-captain.
Following her graduation from FSU with a degree in sports management, Barry played internationally for three years in Switzerland for Volleyball Franches-Montagnes.
