Colonials recognized after 4-0 weekend
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sierra Lange and Jenna Cone picked up weekly awards from the Atlantic 10 on Monday after helping GW softball to a pair of doubleheader sweeps last weekend.
Lange was named Pitcher of the Week after going 3-0 with a 1.40 ERA and 26 strikeouts over three appearances, while Cone earned Player of the Week honors in recognition of her .571 batting average (8-for-14) with a home run and two doubles across the four home victories.
Lange, who leads the A-10 in wins (5) and strikeouts (36), has been honored by the A-10 after both weekends of competition this season. For Cone, it's the fourth conference Player of the Week award of her career.
Lange continued her strong start to the spring with a magnificent weekend in the circle and at the plate.
The sophomore from Texas limited Mount St. Mary's to a run on two hits with 11 strikeouts in a complete game win in Friday's opening game before picking up a victory in relief in the second game.
She followed up on Sunday with her best start in Buff and Blue, tossing a one-hitter with a career-high 14 strikeouts to beat Lafayette, 2-0.
In addition, Lange compiled a team-leading .692 batting average (9-for-13) with three RBIs and three runs scored for the weekend.
A two-time All A-10 honoree, Cone flashed familiar form, especially shining in Friday's doubleheader.
The junior from California went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles to spark a 5-1 win in the opener before smacking her first home run of the season and later scoring the game-winning run in a 7-6 walk-off victory.
She picked up three more hits Sunday as the Colonials swept out Lafayette to complete a perfect weekend on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Off to a 7-2 start, GW heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Carolina Classic from Thursday-Sunday for matchups against Florida Atlantic, Maryland, Fairfield, UNC Greensboro and the host Tar Heels.
