Auster and Fath shined Thursday night
GENEVA, Ohio - Alexander Auster claimed individual and relay gold medals and Moritz Fath smashed a conference record in the 500-yard freestyle to lead George Washington men's swimming and diving Thursday at the Atlantic 10 Championships.
At the meet's halfway mark, the Colonials' bid for a third straight conference crown remains on course. They've piled up 283 points to lead the eight-team pack with George Mason (257) in second and La Salle (177) a distant third.
Fath got the evening off to a flying start by pulling away from the field in the 500-yard freestyle. The junior from Germany shaved more than six seconds off his own program record to finish in 4:19.21. His performance topped an A-10 record that had stood since 2015 and also broke the pool mark.
Auster matched Fath's gold by touching in a career-best time of 20.15 seconds to edge George Mason's Jacob Miller. It was the first individual A-10 gold for the senior from Canada.
Auster also swam a sizzling opening leg in GW's 200-yard freestyle victory. Dylan Arzoni and Max Forstenhaeusler followed before Tommi Wolst finished out the victory in 1:19.85 to break a GW mark set at the 2017 A-10 Championships. It was the third relay gold in as many tries this week for the Buff and Blue.
Beyond those wins, GW flashed its depth by advancing 10 swimmers to finals with five in championship races.
Four Colonials qualified for finals in the 200 IM, paced by a silver-medal swim from Wolst, who touched in a career-best time of 1:47.53. Youssef Ragab finished seventh with Arzoni in ninth place after a win in the B final (1:49.38) and Forstenhaeusler in 11th.
Josh Legge just missed out on a medal in the 500 free, taking fourth in 4:27.01, which puts him No. 2 behind Fath on the program's all-time top 10. Shawn Lemarie also turned in a strong finals swim, winning the B final in a career-best time of 4:30.41.
UP NEXT: The A-10 Championships continue Friday and Saturday. On both days, preliminary events begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals starting at 6:30 p.m. The full schedule is available here.
