Colonials earned three medals Wednesday
The Colonials also received a silver-medal diving effort from Peter Nachtwey to rack up 122 points on the first of four days at the SPIRE Institute. They're on top of the team standings, followed by George Mason (104), St. Bonaventure (80), La Salle (78) and Massachusetts (77).
GW blazed to gold in the night's first event with Emils Pone, Tommi Wolst, Max Forstenhaeusler and Alexander Auster combining to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:27.06. That win dropped more than four-tenths of a second off of the program and conference record the Colonials set in 2018.
The team of Moritz Fath, Youssef Ragab, Dylan Arzoni and Pone put together an electric swim in the 800-yard freestyle relay to finish in 6:28.60 and shave more than a second off the previous mark set by St. Bonaventure in 2014.
Fath set the tone by completing the opening leg in 1:35.47 to break his own program record and establish a new A-10 mark in the 200 free. Ragab and Arzoni kept the lead before Pone finished it out to earn his second gold of the night.
All four GW divers scored on the 1-meter board. Nacthwey led the way, earning a repeat silver in the event with a score of 285.45 in the final. Jake Ortiz also qualified for the championship final and placed fifth (256.60) with Nick Tomczyk (11th) and Nick Malloy (12th) scoring, as well.
UP NEXT: The A-10 Championships continue Thursday with preliminary racing for the first individual swimming events starting at 10 a.m. followed by finals at 6:30 p.m. The full schedule for the four-day meet is available here.
