Colonials honored for opening-weekend success
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Jessicia Linquist and Sierra Lange of GW softball have been recognized by the Atlantic 10 for their success at the season-opening Gardner-Webb Tournament.
Linquist picked up Player of the Week honors on Monday after a sizzling opening weekend at the plate, while Lange was named Pitcher of the Week thanks to her strong start in the circle.
Coming off knee surgery that cut short her 2018 season, Linquist hit .429 (6-for-14) with a slugging percentage of 1.071 to help the Colonials get off to a 3-2 start.
The junior from New Jersey tallied four extra-base hits, including the first two home runs of her career, with eight RBIs and five runs scored. Her best performance came in Sunday's finale when she knocked in a career-high five runs in an 11-2 victory over Georgetown in five innings.
It's the first A-10 weekly honor for Linquist, a catcher who was named to the conference's All-Rookie Team as a first-year in 2017.
Lange earned two wins and a save over four appearances last weekend. The sophomore from Texas posted a 2.52 ERA over 16 2/3 innings of work with 10 strikeouts against two walks.
Lange shined in relief against Furman last Friday when she retired all nine batters she faced with four strikeouts to close out a 6-4 victory. She also tossed a five-inning complete game Sunday against the Hoyas.
In addition, Lange helped her own cause with five hits in 14 at-bats, including a pair of doubles, for the weekend. She scored five runs and drove in a pair.
Lange earned her second A-10 weekly award after previously being recognized on May 7, 2018. That was also the last time GW took two conference awards in the same week with Lange and Priscilla Martinez (Player of the Week) honored.
