Three Colonials recognized after Fall Frenzy Invite
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Three GW swimming and diving student-athletes were honored by the Atlantic 10 on Tuesday for their efforts at last weekend's Sheraton Le Meridien Fall Frenzy Invite hosted by Queens University.
Andrew Cho was selected as Co-Performer of the Week, while the Colonials swept the Rookie of the Week awards with George Aspougalis and Stine Omdahl Petersen recognized.
Cho's weekend in North Carolina was highlighted by a win in the 100 back in a season-best time of 48.56 seconds. The senior from California was also runner-up vs. a tough field in the 200 back (1:48.09). Both of the backstroke times were the best in the conference this season.
A 2019 All-Conference Second Team performer, Cho also posted an 18th-place finish in the 50 free (:21.09), and he was part of four GW relays, as well, including a third-place showing in the 400 medley relay (3:17.80).
It's the second conference weekly award for Cho, who was previously honored as Performer of the Week on Oct. 16, 2018.
Aspougalis continued his tremendous debut season with a pair of individual runner-up finishes. The Greece native took second in the 100 breast in 54.89 seconds and the 200 breast in 1:59.74. Both were A-10 season-best times.
Aspougalis also placed 15th in the 200 IM in 1:54.93 and was part of four GW relays, topped by a third-place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:17.80).
Omdahl Petersen enjoyed a record-breaking weekend, setting one individual and one program mark at the meet. The Norway native took down Lauren Steagall's six-year-old mark with her time of 1:02.97 in the 100 breast, best in the A-10 this season, to take third in the event. She also teamed with Andrea Ho, Meghan Burton and Gemma Atherley on a GW-record swim in the 400 medley relay (3:43.49) for third place.
In the 200 breast, Omdahl Petersen finished fifth in the 200 breast in 2:18.97, and she qualified for B finals in both the 200 IM (2:06.96, 15th) and 100 fly (:57.49, 16th). She was part of a second-place effort in the 200 medley relay (1:41.80), as well.
Omdahl Petersen and Aspougalis were both recognized by the A-10 after the season-opening TYR Fall Classic.
