NASSAU, BAHAMAS — Armel Potter led the George Washington men's basketball team with 25 points and eclipsed 1,000 career points in a 78-70 win over Evansville on Saturday afternoon at the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase. The Colonials will conclude the showcase against Milwaukee in the fifth-place contest on Sunday at 2 pm.
Potter needed 23 points to reach the mark and did so in dramatic fashion, driving the lane to convert a one-handed finger roll to put GW ahead 72-66 with 3:23 left to play.
GW used a 16-5 run midway through the first to grab an 11-point lead (32-21) with 4:52 remaining. Maceo Jack dropped 14 of his 22 in the opening frame, with Potter just behind with 12 at the break.
Evansville forced GW on its heels in the final five minutes of play and cut the deficit to three on a jumper by Jawaun Newton with 1:23 left. With the Aces looking to force overtime, Jamison Battle answered back and nailed his third 3-pointer of the game from the top of the key, giving him 11 points on the afternoon. Battle also added six rebounds for the Colonials in an all-around effort from the first year forward from Minnesota.
Evansville's K.J. Riley led all scorers with 28 points with half coming from the free throw line.
