Colonials have two on preseason teams for first time since 2016-17
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Neila Luma and Sydney Zambrotta of the GW women's basketball team were named to the Atlantic 10's Preseason All-Conference second and third teams, respectively, it was announced on Thursday.
Luma garnered second team honors as one of the top returning players in the conference, and the Colonials leading returning scorer and rebounder. The Macungie, Pa., native paced GW with 10.4 ppg and 6.1 rpg a year ago, recording 16 double-figure scoring games and four double-digit rebounding games. She left a strong impression on the rest of the circuit with two double-doubles in her last three games, including an 18-point, 12-rebound effort in the A-10 Tournament at Saint Joseph's.
Luma enters her junior year having started 59 of a possible 63 games in her time with the Buff & Blue while averaging 27.5 minutes per game. She is one of just two members on this year's team to have two years of experience playing under fourth-year head coach Jennifer Rizzotti.
Zambrotta was tabbed to the third team prior to her initial campaign with GW. The redshirt junior sat out last season per NCAA requirements after transferring in from Louisville. With the Cardinals, Zambrotta appeared in 62 games over two years and established herself as a 3-point sharpshooter, connecting on 43.8 percent of shots from beyond the arc in her first year.
The North Babylon, N.Y., native was a part of Louisville's run to the Final Four in 2017-18, averaging 3.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game while providing over 10 minutes per contest.
The accolades mark the first time since the 2016-17 campaign that the Buff & Blue has had multiple honorees on the preseason All-Conference teams. GW is one six A-10 schools to have at least two student-athletes honored on this year's list.
The Colonials kick off the season in less than a week, traveling to face Villanova next Wednesday at 7 p.m. The home opener is set for Sunday, Nov. 10 at 12 p.m. against Princeton.
