A weekend in Foggy Bottom that was loaded with events from start to finish came to a victorious end Sunday afternoon courtesy of a 72-69 win by George Washington women's basketball against the nearby Towson Tigers in exhibition action at the Smith Center.
Returning stalwarts Gabby Reynolds and Sara Lewis showed off their 2025-26 form and validated the high hopes the pair holds as one of the top returning duos in the Atlantic 10, while intra-conference transfer Alicia Newell, by way of Richmond, showed the promise of the GW newcomers who are expected to help elevate the program a step further after last season's run to the Great Eight of the WNIT.
The contest came down to a nail-biting final seconds with the Revolutionaries clinging to a three-point lead and Towson in possession with 11.0 seconds to go. A jump ball with 3.6 ticks to go gave the ball back to Towson for a desperation last-gasp heave that drew nothing but air, securing the win for George Washington.
Newell led her new squad with 14 points on just five attempts from the floor, putting together an efficient performance that saw her connect on 4-of-5 field goals and 5-of-6 free throws, with four rebounds, team-high tying three assists and team-high tying two steals.
Lewis finished with 13 points and team-leading five rebounds, while Reynolds netted another 13, nine of which came from deep in a 3-of-5 effort from 3-point range.
George Washington connected at a .429 clip from deep (12-of-28), with six different players hitting a triple and four connecting on multiple threes.
GW's first test of the regular season comes in 15 days on Monday, November 2nd, in a 5 p.m. meeting with UDC at the Smith Center on ESPN+.
