Zois wins the all-around to kick off the 2019 season

WASHINGTON – The George Washington gymnastics team opened its 2019 season at the 12th Annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Sunday afternoon in the Charles E. Smith Center. Behind strong team performances on balance beam and floor exercise, the Colonials finished the day second while co-captain Alex Zois claimed the all-around title with a score of 39.050.
North Carolina finished first with a score of 194.175, while GW (2-1) totaled 193.525 behind team scores of 47.875 on vault, 48.175 on bars, 48.675 on beam, and 48.800 on floor. Ball State (193.200) finished third and Cornell (190.750) took fourth.
ROTATION ONE
The Colonials began the afternoon on vault, totaling a team score of 47.875. First-year Deja Chambliss led the way in her collegiate debut with a 9.800, a score that earned second place honors. Zois recorded a 9.600, Cydney Crasa posted a 9.525, and Olivia Zona earned a 9.500.
ROTATION TWO
GW then moved to bars, where they tallied a cumulative score of 48.175. Zois took second place honors on the event with a 9.825, while first-year Olivia Raymond followed closely behind in third with a 9.750. Fellow first-year Simone Banen also had a strong performance on bars, finishing with a 9.700.
ROTATION THREE
On beam, the Colonials continued to heat up, registering a team score of 48.675. GW swept the podium, as Banen topped the field with a 9.825 and Zois and Raymond tied for second with identical 9.775s. Katya Karpova pitched in a 9.674 to help the Colonials' score, with Hannah Cohen and Brooke Bray adding in scores of 9.650 and 9.625, respectively.
ROTATION FOUR
The Colonials' final rotation came on floor, where the squad had their best event of the day, totaling a team score of 48.800. Cydney Crasa picked up right where she left off last season, tying her career-high score of 9.875 to finish in a first place tie. Zois followed closely behind with a 9.850, Kaplan tied her career-high score of 9.775, and Zona posted a 9.750 in her GW floor debut.

Following the meet, Liz Pfeiler was honored as the 2018 recipient of the Attitude is Everything Award, annually awarded to the gymnast who best exemplifies Lindsey's vibrant spirit for life, sincere passion for her sport, and selfless dedication to her team.
The Lindsey Ferris Invitational is now in its 12th season and honors the legacy of the gymnastics alumna. Dozens of GW gymnastics alums packed the Smith Center stands on Sunday to cheer on the Colonials.
