Men’s Basketball Defeated by Richmond

Terry Nolan Jr. had 15 points and Maceo Jack had 14
WASHINGTON -- As a winter storm settled in to the DC area, unfortunately for the GW men's basketball team the chill outside was felt indoors too against the visiting Richmond Spiders as the Colonials offense could get little going in a 76-56 loss. A three-point game at halftime turned into a lopsided defeat at the end as the Colonials (1-2 A-10) will now set their sights on pulling even in A-10 play at La Salle on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
GW was paced in the scoring column by Terry Nolan Jr. (15 points) and Maceo Jack (14), but the Spiders put four in double figures. Richmond forwards Nathan Cayo and Grant Golden combined for 35 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists in a 10-of-15 shooting performance from the floor and 15-of-19 afternoon at the free throw line. The pair was just too much for the undersized Colonials to match up with. Jack pulled down a team-high six rebounds for the home team, but the visitors' size overwhelmed GW.
The Buff and Blue finished 19-of-59 from the field, including 6-of-24 from deep, in a chilly shooting show. It wasn't for lack of open looks, but the shots just didn't go down. Nolan was a slight exception in his 3-of-7 effort from 3-point range and 6-of-7 clip from the charity stripe. Richmond finished 23-of-43 (.535) from the floor and 9-of-22 (.409) from deep while canning 21-of-27 (.778) freebies in the 76-56 contest.
After the teams split a pair of meetings last season with each side protecting their home court, GW has its work cut out in order to split the season series again. What a difference a year made in terms of the Buff and Blue's proclivity to knock down shots against the Spiders at Smith Center. Last season the Colonials torched the nets to the tune of a .689 field goal percentage in the 103-77 victory. This time around, GW will have to circle February 9th on the calendar for its next shot at payback, when the Colonials storm Richmond for a 6 p.m. tip regionally broadcast on MASN.
