Colonials to compete in six tournaments in preparation for dual-match play
2018 Fall Schedule
WASHINGTON – The George Washington women's tennis team is slated to compete in six tournaments this fall, head coach Torrie Browning announced on Tuesday.
Each tournament will feature flighted singles and doubles play leading up to the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, where the Colonials will compete in a tournament format for singles and doubles.
"This fall tournament schedule will definitely challenge us, but I think will make us well prepared for the spring," Browning said. "I'm hoping now since we're a ranked team in the Atlantic Region that we can get more of our athletes into ITA Regionals, which is always exciting. Regionals is always a top tournament and selects the top players in the region."
For the third straight season, the Colonials are set to open fall competition at the Bedford Mid-Atlantic Cup from Sept. 14-17. Rising senior and 2018 Atlantic 10 Co-Performer of the Year Maria Siopacha will then travel to Malibu, California to represent the Buff and Blue at the ITA Oracle Masters, where she will compete against some of the top competitors in the country.
"Maria was selected to play in the ITA Oracle Masters which is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country and takes the top players from each conference," Browning said. "I'm really happy for her as all of her hard work paid off and I'm excited to see her compete against the nation's best."
The Colonials will then make the trip to Wilmington, N.C. for the UNCW Invite from Sept. 28-30 before heading to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy-hosted Blue and Gold Invite (Oct. 5-7) for the fourth straight season.
GW will then compete at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships (Oct. 12-16), where the winners will earn automatic bids to the ITA/USTA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November.
The fall season concludes with a trip down to Miami, Fla. for the FIU Invite from Nov. 9-11.
"Overall, I think this is one of our best fall schedules to date and I can't wait to get started," Browning said.
