Thor Arne Höfs tied career high with nine saves
DURHAM, N.C. – Behind a career-high tying nine saves from Thor Arne Höfs, George Washington men's soccer battled No. 15 Duke to a scoreless draw Tuesday at Koskinen Stadium.
The Colonials (4-3-1) held strong defensively for 110 minutes, despite being outshot, 29-4, to preserve the shutout and tie the Blue Devils (4-2-1) in their final tune-up for Atlantic 10 play.
Höfs made three saves in each half and then three more in 20 minutes of overtime to earn his third clean sheet of the season and the 20th of his career to tie Jeff Brown's program record.
NOTEWORTHY
- Höfs handled every challenge in a career-best performance, including a handful of highlight-worthy stops. The senior keeper kept the game scoreless in the 17th minute with a point-blank stop on a flick by Daniele Proch. He was ready to stonewall a dangerous header from Ian Murphy in the 49th minute, and he shut down Duke's best chance in OT in the 95th minute with a lunge to his left to punch away a free kick from Daniele Proch that appeared ticketed for the corner of the net.
- GW nearly cashed in on its first shot of the day in the 29th minute. Dylan Lightbourn found Haukur Hilmarsson in space on the counterattack, but Duke keeper Will Pulisic came up with a sprawling save to deny Hilmarsson. The Colonials' best chance in the second half came in the 65th minute when Pulisic leaped to tip Lightbourn's header off a free kick from Brady O'Connor over the crossbar. Lightbourn recorded GW's other shot on goal in the final minute of regulation.
- GW tied a ranked foe for the first time since a scoreless stalemate at then-No. 12 Wake Forest on Sept. 13, 2016. The Colonials have now faced a ranked opponent in three straight seasons and six of their seven years under head coach Craig Jones.
- GW's backline of Joshua Yurasits, Reese Moore, Marcelo Lage and Sam Reavis went the distance, hanging tough amid consistent pressure from the Blue Devils.
UP NEXT: GW returns to North Carolina on Saturday for a a 6 p.m. start against Davidson in the A-10 opener for both clubs. The Colonials carry a three-game unbeaten streak into the contest.
