Colonials downed by Davidson in OT
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Peirce Williams and Oscar Haynes Brown scored 37 seconds apart in the second half, but George Washington men's soccer fell to Davidson, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday night to begin Atlantic 10 play.
Playing their third straight overtime contest, the Colonials (4-4-1, 0-1 A-10) fell to the Wildcats (5-4, 1-0) at Alumni Stadium on Quinn Dudek's golden goal in the 98th minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 58th Minute: Holdsworth sent a corner kick into the middle of the box and Williams emerged from the pack to direct a header just under the crossbar for his first goal of the season. (GW 1, Davidson 0)
- 59th Minute: Off the restart, GW quickly secured possession and added to its lead. Haynes Brown shook free down the left side and ripped a perfect shot with his right foot from about 25 yards out that curled around the Davidson keeper and inside the right post. (GW 2, Davidson 0)
- 85th Minute: Davidson got on the board with Jaylen Thompson's goal off a corner kick. A GW defender managed to save the initial attempt at the goal line, but Thompson was there to finish the rebound. (GW 2, Davidson 1)
- 89th Minute: Henry Howell tied it for Davidson with less than two minutes left in regulation, navigating traffic in front of the net to convert a shot off a pass from Charlie Caswell. (GW 2, Davidson 2)
- 98th Minute: Thompson capped a long run down the right side with a cross into the box, which Dudek was able to finish in front for the game-winning goal. (Davidson 3, GW 2)
NOTEWORTHY
- Williams, who played a season-high 54 minutes in his third appearance of 2018, now has four career goals and 10 career points.
- After missing Tuesday's draw at No. 15 Duke due to injury, Haynes Brown entered as a substitute in the 30th minute against Davidson and scored his ninth goal of the season. The sophomore from England continues to lead the A-10 in goals and points (20) and rank among the national leaders in both categories. He was responsible for four of GW's eight shots on goal in the game.
- A transfer from American, Holdsworth picked up his second assist of the season and the ninth of his collegiate career.
- Thor Arne Höfs made three saves for GW. Before Davidson broke through, the senior goalkeeper hadn't allowed a goal in 277 minutes and 19 seconds of game time, dating back to a 3-2 overtime win over Binghamton on Sept. 18.
- This was GW's third straight overtime game and fourth of the season. The Colonials are 1-2-1 in games that go to extra time.
