Colonials travel to George Mason on Wednesday night
George Washington men's soccer renews its Revolutionary Rivalry with George Mason on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. start at George Mason Stadium.
The Colonials (4-4-1, 0-1 A-10) make the short trip to Fairfax, Va., seeking to even their Atlantic 10 record. They have won three straight in the series against the Patriots (2-4, 0-0).
LAST TIME OUT: GW dropped its A-10 opener at Davidson in overtime Saturday. The Colonials took the lead on second-half goals by Peirce Williams and Oscar Haynes Brown 37 seconds apart, but the Wildcats battled back to win, 3-2, on Quinn Dudek's golden goal in the 98th minute.
OSCAR'S OFFENSE: Oscar Haynes Brown returned from injury against Davidson to score his ninth goal of the season in eight games. The sophomore from England has also tallied a pair of assists to give him 20 points so far. He currently ranks fourth nationally in goals per game (1.13) and fifth in points per game (2.50).
Haynes Brown needs one goal to become the first Colonial to hit double-digit scoring in a season since Yoni Berhanu in 2011. Right now, he has four more goals and five more points than anyone else in the A-10.
DANDY DEFENSE: Behind a career-high tying nine saves from Thor Arne Höfs, GW stifled No. 15 Duke for 110 minutes last Tuesday in a scoreless draw for its third shutout of the season. The Colonials had gone 277 minutes and 19 seconds of game time without allowing a goal before Davidson found the net in the 85th minute over the weekend.
SCOUTING GEORGE MASON: The Patriots enter their conference opener at 2-4 overall after falling 3-0 to Appalachian State on their home field last Saturday. George Mason has allowed 2.33 goals per game, most among A-10 clubs. Colin Brezniak and Tunde Akinlosotu both have recorded three goals and two assists to pace the squad's attack.
GW won last season's meeting on the Mount Vernon Campus, 1-0, on Haynes Brown's golden goal in the first minute of overtime. Höfs made four saves to record the shutout in net.
COMING UP: The Colonials have the weekend off before welcoming St. Bonaventure to the Vern for their first A-10 home game on Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.
