Colonials open conference play Saturday
Fresh off a scoreless draw at No. 15 Duke, George Washington men's soccer opens its Atlantic 10 schedule at Davidson on Saturday.
The Colonials (4-3-1) carry a three-game unbeaten streak into their 6 p.m. clash with the Wildcats (4-4) at Alumni Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: GW dueled the nationally ranked Blue Devils for 110 minutes in a scoreless stalemate on Tuesday.
The Buff and Blue defense held strong in the face of consistent pressure, anchored by a career-high tying nine saves from Thor Arne Höfs. The goalkeeper earned his third clean sheet of the season and the 20th of his career to tie the program record.
FOR THE RECORD: Höfs tied Jeff Brown's program shutout mark Tuesday in his 50th career appearance between the pipes for the Buff and Blue.
The keeper from Germany posted two shutouts in 2015, a program-record nine in 2016 and six last fall before adding three in eight games this season.
Höfs enters Saturday's match with 22 wins, 227 saves, a .799 save percentage and a 1.11 goals against average for his career.
GETTING STARTED: GW is 2-2-2 in A-10 openers under head coach Craig Jones, including a 2-1 win at Davidson to kick off conference play in 2015. This is the Colonials' sixth time in his seven seasons starting their A-10 slate on the road.
SCOUTING DAVIDSON: Davidson also faced off against an ACC power on Tuesday, falling 5-1 at No. 1 Wake Forest. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime before the Demon Deacons netted four unanswered goals over the final 45 minutes.
Jaylen Thompson and Ned Morrissett are tied for the team lead with five points apiece. Both have two goals and an assist on the season.
GW holds a five-match unbeaten streak in the series against Davidson. Last fall, the Colonials notched a 2-0 win over the Wildcats on the Mount Vernon Campus. Dylan Lightbourn scored in the opening minute before Kobi Osei-Wusu added an insurance goal.
COMING UP: GW is back on the road next Wednesday, making the short trip to face Revolutionary Rival George Mason in Fairfax, Va., at 7 p.m.
