Legault headed to Faye Bennet MAISA Women’s Singlehanded Championship
SETTING SAIL: After opening its season last weekend, the GW sailing team will get its first taste of championship racing as senior Riley Legault heads to the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship at Navy this weekend.
LAST TIME OUT: GW turned in impressive performances in three regattas last weekend. At the Laser South Qualifier hosted by Navy, senior Adam DiDomizio and first-year Cameron Feves finished fifth and sixth, respectively, to qualify for the MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship which will be held Sept. 22-23. Sophomore Soenke Jordan (7th place) and first-year Michael Ehnot (9th) finished just outside the top six who qualified for MAISA.
At the Navy Women's Open, GW entered a trio of boats and claimed 2nd, 4th and 15th place finishes. Skipper Aitana Mendiguren paired with crews Sarah Noyes and Clare Cassidy-Gardner to take second place, while Legault skippered with crews Alexandra Fayer, Emma Mendenhall and Taylor Milefchik to finish fourth.
Finally, the Colonials finished second in a 17-team field at the Riley Cup hosted by Old Dominion. In A Division, skipper Andrew Sheerin and crew Tanner Chapko claimed second place, while first-year skipper Matt Logue and crew Michael Houllahan were third in B Division.
WHAT'S AHEAD: Legault is looking for a top-five finish at the Faye Bennet, which would qualify her for the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship for the fourth consecutive year. The Florida native finished third in the event last year to improve upon fourth-place results in her first two seasons.
The Colonials will also send a team to compete in the Chesapeake Invite hosted by Mount St. Mary's. GW's Alumni Regatta which had been scheduled Saturday has been postponed due to the weather forecast and will be rescheduled for the spring semester.
Live scores for both regattas can be found here.
