Colonials net three goals in second half to secure victory
WASHINGTON — The George Washington women's soccer team continued its season-opening win streak on Sunday afternoon, dropping Stetson, 4-1, at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
After GW established a 2-0 lead early in the second half, the Hatters were able to cut the deficit to one with a goal of their own at the 59th minute before the Colonials pushed back offensively with another pair of tallies to cement their 4-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• 11th Minute: After two early close calls by the Hatters, Sofia Pavon proved her playmaking ability once again, passing the ball to Natalie Silberman, who was able to draw out the Hatters' keeper and shoot the ball into the empty left hand corner of the net. (GW 1, SU 0)
• 50th Minute: Silberman continued her momentum from the first half, where she matched her previous game-high of three shots, with her second goal of the game. The sophomore pressured the Stetson keeper and stole the ball, shooting it right below the crossbar to give GW the 2-0 advantage. (GW 2, SU 0)
• 59th Minute: After holding the Hatters scoreless through 59 minutes, Stetson was finally able to break past the Buff and Blue defense, scoring after a scramble in front of the net. (GW 2, SU 1)
• 63rd Minute: GW continued to pressure the Stetson defense and was once again able to find the back of the net with a goal from Mia Barreda. (GW 3, SU 1 )
• 84th Minute: With victory just six minutes away, Alexis Williams scored her fourth goal in as many games by drawing the Hatters' keeper way out of the box, stealing the ball and shooting it into the empty net. (GW 4, SU 1)
NOTEWORTHY
• Mia Barreda's goal at the 63rd minute marked her first tally of the 2018 season.
• Alexis Williams continued to dominate on attack and scored her fourth goal in as many games, marking her longest career scoring streak. The sophomore paces the team with nine points (4g, 1a) and is 9-for-9 with shots on goal.
• Natalie Silberman also had a career-high game for the Colonials, finishing the day with a game-high two goals and five shots. The forward has started all four contests for the Buff and Blue and ranks tied for first on the team with nine shots on the season.
• GW outshot its opponent for the fourth consecutive match, taking 16 shots to the Hatters' six in today's game. The Colonials also boasted a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
• The last time the Colonials opened their season with four consecutive victories was in 2016 when the squad posted six straight wins to kickoff the season.
