UNIVERSITY PARK, Wash. -- Logan Lowe captured his third collegiate victory in dramatic fashion on Tuesday at the famed Chambers Bay Golf Course by firing a 4-under 67 in the final round to get to a playoff, where he birdied the first hole to claim victory.
Lowe came into Tuesday's final round one shot off the lead at 1-under par following rounds of 67 and 74 on Monday. His first 11 holes were steady with 10 pars and a birdie, but he picked up consecutive birdies at 15 and 16 to get to -4. At his final hole of the day, the par 3 third, Lowe nearly aced his tee shot and tapped in for birdie to finish 5-under and get to a playoff with San Francisco's Tim Wilding.
Playing the par 4 ninth, Lowe stuck his approach shot and rolled in the birdie putt to win. He's now won two of his last three stroke play events, having captured the Camden Collegiate Invitational to close the fall season.
Lowe, Widing and Felix Mory of CSU-Northridge (-2) were the only players to finish the tournament under par at a course that has hosted the U.S. Open and is well-known for its difficulty. Just 11 players among the 88-man field finished better than 10-over par.
As a team, GW came in third place to match its best finish of the season. For the third straight tournament, the Colonials turned in their lowest score in the final round, collectively shooting 291 on Tuesday following a 297 and 303 on Monday's opening rounds. San Francisco took the title with a 16-over 868 while UCSB was runner-up with a 29-over 881.
GW has just one tournament remaining on its regular season slate, the Greenbrier Invitational in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, from April 9-10.
