ORLANDO -- The GW golf team closed out the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday at Grand Cypress Golf Club by turning in its best collective round with a 9-over par 297 to finish in eighth place.
GW saw two of its seniors, Jack Porcelli and Christian Cichan, turn in their finest round of the week with a 1-over 73 and 2-over 74, respectively. Porcelli played his final seven holes 2-under par while Cichan finished par-birdie-par to end their final collegiate tournament in memorable fashion. Meanwhile, classmate Vince Palazzolo captured a top-20 finish with a three-day total of 229 which led the team.
The trio helped to elevate the program throughout their time in Foggy Bottom and led the squad to three top-three finishes this season, including the school's first tournament win in six years when they took the Navy Spring Invitational on April 14-15.
"The seniors have left a big impact and they're going to be sorely missed," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "Each one of them contributed in multiple ways to building the culture, the team camaraderie, the bond our team has. It's tough to say goodbye to this group of guys because we've done a lot of special things.
"We went from not being able to contend to believing we could, and then to actually doing it even in the big events. For them to get a win at Navy is really special for them to say they were able to accomplish that. I'm disappointed we couldn't have given them a better send off because they deserve it, but there's a lot to take away from the year they had."
While the seniors polished off their careers on a positive note, it was sophomore Adrian Castagnola who had the round of the day for GW with an even-par 72. The Texas native shot 36 on each side, balancing four birdies with four bogeys for the lowest round of the tournament from a Colonial.
Though Logan Lowe had a disappointing weekend in Orlando with a T-41 finish, the junior was honored for his performance throughout the season as he was named Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Year.
Davidson took the championship with a three-day total of 891 while Dayton was runner-up with an 897 and Rhode Island finished third (902). The Wildcats' Mike Blasey earned the individual championship with a 2-over par total of 218 (74-70-74), besting the rest of the field by two shots.
