WASHINGTON - Jenna Cone and Priscilla Martinez cracked seventh-inning home runs, but George Washington softball's comeback came up short in an 8-7 loss to St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.
The Colonials clinched a winning weekend to start Atlantic 10 play with Saturday's doubleheader sweep at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. The setback in Sunday's finale ended their program-record 13-game winning streak.GW (22-8, 2-1 A-10) fought to the final out against the Bonnies (6-14, 1-2). The Colonials trailed by six runs entering the final inning before Cone blasted a three-run homer that scored Criza Bulanadi and Sidney Bloomfield, who had both singled to start the frame.
With two outs, Martinez launched a two-run shot to pull the home team within 8-7. The rally ended there with St. Bonaventure's Rylee Hehir inducing a groundout to finish her complete-game victory.
St. Bonaventure scored a run in the top of the first and led the rest of the way. GW pulled within 2-1 on Elena Shelepak's RBI single in the third and 3-2 on another run-scoring hit by Shelepak in the fifth.
The Bonnies extended their advantage with four runs in the sixth and another in the seventh before GW's late power surge.
For Cone, her team-leading eighth long ball capped another superb weekend. The sophomore form California homered in all three games of the series. She hit .857 (6-for-7) with nine RBIs and four runs scored, plus two walks and three HBPs, to increase her season average to .468.
Martinez's homer was her third of the season. The sophomore also ripped her sixth double in the second inning.
Shelepak had three hits Sunday, including a double, and closed the series with four extra-base hits. Bloomfield and Bulanadi added two hits apiece and combined to score four runs in the series finale.
ON DECK: GW's doubleheader vs. Coppin State set for Tuesday has been postponed due to changes in the Eagles' schedule caused by this week's snowstorm. No makeup date has been announced.
GW will continue its homestand next weekend, welcoming A-10 foe Massachusetts to the Mount Vernon Campus. The three-game set begins with a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
