WASHINGTON - George Washington softball opened a series against Massachusetts on Friday, falling, 7-4, in eight innings.
With the game tied at 4, the Minutewomen led off the extra frame with a solo home run and later tacked on two more runs to take the first of three Atlantic 10 contests at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.Priscilla Martinez tallied four hits for the Colonials (22-9, 2-2 A-10), while Sierra Lange had two hits and knocked in a game-high three runs.
GW grabbed a 2-0 lead on Lange's two-run double in the second inning before UMass tied it in the fourth and took the lead at 4-2 in the fifth. The Colonials battled back in the bottom of the inning to even the score on bases-loaded walks from Lange and Rochelle Draper.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock in regulation, moving runners into scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but neither could push the go-ahead run home. The clubs combined to leave 26 runners on base over the eight innings.
In the eighth, UMass (15-10, 4-0) took the lead on Jena Cozza's homer and went on to bat around. The Colonials put their first two runners on in the bottom of the frame before a line-drive double play and a popout finished the game.
GW starter Sarah Costlow pitched effectively into the seventh inning. The senior hurler allowed four runs (one earned) on seven hits before being relieved by Kaitlin Buff, who gave up three runs in 1 2/3 innings and took her first loss of the season (6-1).
ON DECK: GW and UMass close the series Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
