WASHINGTON - George Washington softball capped a perfect run at its Colonial Classic in style Sunday, blasting Fairleigh Dickinson, 20-0, in five innings.
The Colonials scored in every inning of the finale, highlighted by an 11-run fourth in which they sent 15 batters to the plate. That offensive explosion followed a 9-6 victory over Princeton to start the day at GW Softball field on the Mount Vernon Campus. It was GW's third doubleheader sweep of Princeton and Fairleigh Dickinson in as many days. The Colonials (15-7) wrapped the weekend at 6-0 with four wins via run rule. They outscored their opponents, 64-9, in all, dominating with an offense that hit .477 collectively and a pitching staff that compiled a 1.85 ERA.
Jenna Cone finished the day 4-for-4 with a home run, seven RBIs and three runs scored. For the weekend, the sophomore from California went 8-for-8 with seven walks and three HBPs. She was retired just three times in 21 plate appearances with all of the outs driving in runs as sacrifice flies.
Eight different Colonials tallied at least six hits over the six victories, including Elena Shelepak, who had a team-high 10 hits and drove in 11 runs.
GW 9, Princeton 6: The Colonials used a six-run fourth inning to drop the Tigers (0-10) in the opener.
The game was tied at 1 before GW's decisive frame. The home team did most of the damage with two outs. Eight straight Colonials reached base via six hits and two walks with Cone, Shelepak, Morgan Rinehart and Priscilla Martinez driving in runs.
Cone extended the lead to 9-3 in the fifth with a two-run home run. She went the opposite way to clear the right field fence with her team-leading fourth long ball of the season.
Cone tied her career high with five RBIs and scored twice. The two hitters in front of her in the lineup, Marta Fuentes and Sidney Bloomfield, also scored twice.
Kaitlin Buff pitched the first five innings to improve to 3-0. The sophomore left-hander allowed three runs on three hits before Ashley Pilcher finished it out.
GW 20, Fairleigh Dickinson 0 (5 innings): The Colonials hit full offensive stride against the Knights, rolling up their 20 runs on 17 hits to win via run rule.
Shelepak got the scoring started with a two-run double in the first inning, and GW kept piling on with four more runs in the second and three in the third before putting up 11 in the fourth.
The Colonials scored the 11 runs on six hits and took advantage of four Fairleigh Dickinson errors. Jessica Linquist started the huge inning with a single and later added a double. Alessandra Ponce and Riley Tejcek also reached base twice in the frame.
Among the many highlights, Faith Weber hit an RBI triple in her first at-bat of the season and raced home when the throw to third sailed wild.
Sarah Costlow was the beneficiary of all that offense. The senior hurler tossed her first shutout of the season, limiting the Knights (4-9) to three hits over the five innings. She improved to 6-1 with her second victory of the weekend.
UP NEXT: GW continues this homestand Wednesday, hosting UMBC for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Colonials will welcome Siena, Brown and Lafayette for the Buff and Blue Challenge, starting Friday.
