Softball Takes Down New Mexico

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Rochelle Draper hit a home run and knocked in three runs on Sunday, lifting George Washington softball past New Mexico, 5-2, in its finale at UC-Riverside's Amy S. Harrison Classic.
The Colonials won four of five on their West Coast trip to improve to 7-3 for the season, equaling their best 10-game start in program history (2006).GW took the lead in the top of the first and kept it the rest of the way. Singles by Marta Fuentes and Criza Bulanadi to start the game turned into a run on Jenna Cone's ground out.
Cone and Draper picked up two-out RBIs in the third to extend the advantage to 3-0.
After New Mexico plated a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, Draper restored the cushion with her third career homer, a two-run shot scoring Priscilla Martinez. Three of the senior from California's five hits this season have been for extra bases.
Sarah Costlow held the Lobos in check to pick up her fourth win in five starts this season. The senior who grew up just a few miles away from Amy S. Harrison Field went the distance without allowing an earned run to lower her ERA to 1.58. She allowed six hits and struck out six against three walks.
Protecting a three-run lead, Costlow pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh. She closed out the victory by getting a pop out and a strikeout.
Sidney Bloomfield (2-for-3) was the lone Colonial with multiple hits, while Fuentes reached base three times with a pair of walks to bump her batting average to .359 and also stole two bases.
After driving in a pair of runs, Cone now has a team-leading 12 RBIs.
ON DECK: GW's home opener is set for Wednesday. The Colonials will welcome crosstown foe Howard to GW Softball Field for a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
