ORLANDO, Fla. - George Washington softball swept its season-opening doubleheader Friday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom Invitational.
The Colonials started with a 12-2 win over defending MEAC champion Florida A&M and followed up with a tense 3-2 victory over Stetson in the nightcap at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Sierra Lange shined in her debut in Buff and Blue with a home run in the opener and a complete game victory in the nightcap.GW scored in six of seven innings against the Rattlers, boosted by home runs from Lange, Jenna Cone, Priscilla Martinez. GW 12, Florida A&M 2: The Colonials took the lead before the game's first out and cruised past the Rattlers.
Marta Fuentes scored that run on a wild pitch, capitalizing on Florida A&M's three-base error to open the game. The Colonials added two more in the second on Lange's homer in her collegiate debut and made it 5-0 with two more in the third.
After the Rattlers scored a pair of unearned runs, GW found the offense to put the game out of reach. Cone and Martinez both smacked their long balls as part of a four-run seventh inning.
Fuentes finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored in her Buff and Blue debut, while Martinez had three hits and also walked.
Sarah Costlow pitched the first six innings without allowing an earned run to pick up her 41st career victory. The senior allowed just three hits and struck out six before giving way to Ashley Pilcher.
GW 3, Stetson 2: A pitchers' dual was tied at 1 into the seventh inning when the Colonials scratched across a pair of runs. Fuentes scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch before Cone brought home Criza Bulanadi with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the inning, Lange gave up a single and a double before recovering to get three straight outs and clinch victory in her debut in the circle. The freshman from Texas finished it with her eighth strikeout of the game. She went the distance, deftly working around eight hits and three walks to allow just two runs.
Fuentes had two hits and scored two runs out of the leadoff spot with Bulanadi posting a hit, an RBI and a run scored out of the No. 2 hole.
