WASHINGTON -- Needing a win to snap a mini-funk, the George Washington men's basketball team seized the opportunity on Wednesday night against the Tigers from Towson with a hard-fought, 68-64 win against a team that came prepped for a rock fight.
The Tigers gave GW a handful with a tough and physical style, and the Colonials didn't back down. A bit bruised and bloodied after a brutal battle, sophomore Javier Langarica not only drew his first career starting assignment, he also enjoyed his biggest moment in Buff and Blue. Clinging to a three-point lead with :13 seconds remaining, the Spaniard stepped to the charity stripe and gamely buried two free throws to make it a two-possession game. After a Towson layup on the other end, another G-Dub soph, Terry Nolan Jr., iced the game with a single free throw for a four-point edge that was the game's final margin.
Nolan Jr. finished with a career-high 24 points, in a performance that featured both marksmanship (4-of-9 3pt. FG) and aggressiveness attacking the rim (10-of-14 FT). Langarica logged a career-high 31 minutes and registered a career-high eight points, earning the admiration of his head coach for his toughness in the process, who likened him to a heavyweight fighter.
DJ Williams once again proved to be a steady source of production in the scoring column, as he dropped in 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, while tying Maceo Jack for team-high honors with five rebounds against the bigger Tigers, who held the edge on the glass (36-24), in the paint (28-18), and with second chance points (16-5), but ultimately not where it mattered most: on the scoreboard.
Both squads enjoyed decent-sized leads throughout the game, with GW's reaching as large as 13 approaching the midway point of the first half, while Towson held a seven-point edge with 10:39 to go. The Colonials would rally, however, and seize a lead that they would not relinquish on a pair of Nolan Jr. free throws with 4:59 to play. The Baltimore native went on a scoring spree from 4:59 remaining until the 2:30 mark, with nine consecutive points for the GW cause courtesy of three free throws and a pair of triples in the stretch. While not overwhelmingly efficient, GW's volume at the charity stripe accounted for the deciding edge in the toe-to-toe battle, as the home team knocked down 18-of-26 free throws, while Towson was rewarded with just 12 foul shots, making eight.
The Tigers were led by Brian Fobbs' 17 points, and he was joined in double figures by Nakye Sanders and Nicolas Timberlake who chipped-in with 10 apiece. Dennis Tunstall ripped down 13 rebounds for the visitors.
GW will now look to make it two-in-row with a 2016 NIT Championship Game rematch against Valparaiso on the horizon on Saturday at 4pm on ESPN+.
