Volleyball Comes Back For Yet Another Five-Set Victory

Colonials triumph in five sets for the fifth time this season
BRONX, N.Y. – GW volleyball found itself down two sets to one on Friday afternoon at Fordham but persevered with a spirited rally to take the fourth and fifth sets in a victory over the Rams at Rose Hill Gym. Half of GW's wins this season have come in five sets.
GW 3, Fordham 2 (25-20, 20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 15-9)
Key Stats
• Four different Colonials (10-15, 4-9) recorded double-digit kills in the comeback as the team hit .241 (67k-21e-191a) on the afternoon.
• Junior Skylar Iott recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 18 digs and was joined in double figures by seniors Kelsey Clark (16 kills, .394 attack percentage) and Alexis Lete (13 kills, .385) and junior Jordan Young (12 kills, .214).
• Clark and Lete, GW's two seniors, both set new career highs in kills with their respective efforts.
• Junior Jaimeson Lee stuffed the stat sheet with a career-high 56 assists, 12 digs, five blocks, a kill and an ace.
• Five Colonials recorded double-figure digs, including first-year Heather Merryman, who contributed a career-best 18.
• Fordham (9-17, 2-11) hit a respectable .188, but was out-dug by GW 107-93. The Colonials also posted advantages in kills (67-62), assists (63-57) and aces (6-3).
How it Happened
Set 1: GW 25, Fordham 20
• Neither side was able to gain much separation until GW used a 9-4 run to move ahead, 19-17.
• Fordham quickly responded to even the set at 19-19, but GW utilized a 6-1 run to finish the set, capping off the stanza with a service ace from first-year Bella Bowman.
Set 2: Fordham 25, GW 20
• Both teams continued to attack well in the second set with just a combined eight errors.
• Similar to the first set, the stanza was played within a three-point margin until Fordham broke open an 18-18 deadlock with a 7-2 spurt to even the match.
Set 3: Fordham 25, GW 19
• The Rams posted a match-best 17 kills in the third set, recording five in an 8-3 stretch that gave the hosts an 18-13 edge.
• GW climbed to within three at 21-18 on a kill from Lete, but Fordham claimed four of the final five points to move within a set of victory.
Set 4: GW 25, Fordham 17
• With its back against the wall, GW roared back with one of its best sets of the season, hitting .326 with 17 kills against just three errors to even the match.
• A 7-1 stretch in the middle of the set that saw points from four different Colonials was the key to GW opening up an advantage it would not relinquish.
Set 5: GW 15, Fordham 9
• The Buff & Blue stormed out of the gate in the tiebreak with five straight points on the back of two kills each from Iott and Lete.
• Fordham would get no closer than two the rest of the way as GW finished off the match with consecutive points on Ram errors.
