Arnaldo Toro went for second helpings with 11 points and 13 rebounds
WASHINGTON -- GW fans had a lot to be thankful for on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center, where the GW men's basketball team feasted on the Manhattan Jaspers for its first win of the season. After a Thanksgiving dinner at the Joseph residence on Thursday, GW ate again with a delicious defensive performance in Foggy Bottom en route to a 70-43 victory.Â
The Colonials limited Manhattan to table scraps, allowing their guests just 17 makes from the field in 55 attempts, for a .309 field goal percentage. The Colonials were anything but generous to the Jaspers from the land of plenty, as Manhattan would leave a plethora of points behind the arc in a 2-of-18 (.111) three-point shooting night. GW gobbled up turnovers for dessert, helping itself to 21 Jaspers' miscues and yamming them into 28 points on the other end.Â
GW dined early in its first course over the game's opening 20 minutes, with junior transfer DJ Williams serving 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting to his visitors from New York, while classmate Armel Potter dished five assists before the second course began. Williams finished with a game-high 16 points while Potter's six dimes sat at the head of the table.
When Williams collected the leftovers of a missed three-pointer and laid it back in at the 12:50 mark, GW sat back with its largest lead of the season at 54-24, and the Colonials were able to rest happy. Junior Arnaldo Toro harvested an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double as a rock in the paint. Justin Williams was on a roll too in a near-perfect outing, carving out a 3-for-3 effort from the floor to finish with eight points, along with four rebounds, in his eight minutes of action.Â
A cornucopia of Colonials enjoyed a serving in the scoring column and walk-ons Luke Sasser and Malcolm Elashari-Rashed were the stuffing as the pair got a taste of their first points of their careers as part of 10 members in the GW family who contributed points to the winning recipe.Â
The Colonials will look for back-to-back wins at home again on Wednesday when the Vermont Catamounts come to play for a 7pm tip.
