Volleyball Hangs Tough with VCU in Friday Night Defeat

Lee notches third straight double-double, increases season total to 14
WASHINGTON – GW volleyball gave league-leading VCU a test for the second time in as many matches before ultimately falling in straight sets on Friday night at the Smith Center.
VCU 3, GW 0 (23-25, 24-26, 14-25)
Key Stats
• GW (8-15, 2-9) received a solid attacking performance from junior Skylar Iott, who provided 15 kills while hitting .244.
• Junior Jaimeson Lee registered her third straight double-double, and 14th overall this season, with 28 assists and 12 digs. She also added three block assists and an ace.
• VCU (17-7, 12-0) maintained its perfect league mark behind a stout attack that hit .273 (47k-17e-110a) on the night.
• Four different Colonials provided three block assists in seniors Alexis Lete and Kelsey Clark, Iott, and Lee. Iott added a solo block to give GW a 7.0-6.0 edge for the match.
How it Happened
Set 1: VCU 25, GW 23
• GW utilized a 7-0 burst with first-year Heather Merryman on serve to grab a 9-4 advantage early on.
• VCU would rally to take a 19-15 lead before Merryman returned to serve and rattled off four straight points to even the set.
• The Rams would eventually fend off GW by scoring six of the final 10 points.
Set 2: VCU 26, GW 24
• GW had a chance to even the match, leading the set late at 24-23. However, VCU scored three straight to seize momentum and swipe the set.
• Iott posted seven of her 15 kills in the set as GW hit .238 (13k-3e-42a) as a team, but was bested by VCU's .341 (21k-63-44a).
Set 3: VCU 25, GW 14
• The Rams finished off the match by pulling away through the middle stages of the set. GW was unable to get its attack in gear in the third, recording seven kills to VCU's 12.
